Some people learn through books and classes, while others have a more personal approach; I
suppose the latter characterizes me. I've gained insight through my own personal experiences,
and my journey with addiction.
My initial treatment began 35 years ago after I found myself in a confined facility, solitary
confinement, under Chapter 51.
That marked the beginning of a long downward spiral. It did not lead me to the path of sobriety
but rather to resentments, detoxes, treatments, halfway houses, a psychiatric facility, and,
eventually, a nursing home.
Throughout my painful journey of substance abuse, I witnessed the deaths of friends and
several suicides of loved ones as a result of their own addictions.
Finally, roughly 15 years ago, I was stable enough to be discharged from the nursing facility, and
my recovery began.
After years of pain and grief, I returned to school and attended numerous recovery groups to
learn more about addiction, how it works, and why.
I enjoy the conversations of recovery with anyone, regardless of their age, and the pursuit of a
new life of freedom that few people will ever have.
I promise to help our community recover from this epidemic, to help the elderly heal, and to
educate our youth about the dangers of addiction, as well as inspire those with disabilities to
persevere.
