Certified Parent Peer Specialist
Neurodivergent parent to three neurodivergent kids
In 2010 I received a Bachelor of Science in Family & Child Studies from Northern Illinois University and began working as a Family Specialist at a Crisis Nursery. In 2012 I had my first child and realized quickly that my experience as a mother was vastly different from many of my peers. I had been diagnosed with depression and anxiety as a teenager, but it wasn’t until parenthood that my ADHD became glaringly obvious. Like many late-diagnosed women, I was mostly okay until I brought little dysregulated babies into my barely regulated life.
This meant my first decade of parenthood could be summed up as a vast array of trial and error, survival tactics, therapies, and many tears. Thankfully, we’ve hit a sweet spot. With four out of the five people in my house being neurodivergent, it meant not only finding the right support and learning new skills but also developing a new perspective of what thriving looks like for us. Spoiler alert: it still looks different than most families; however, I feel significantly less shame. In 2023, I finished training to become a Parent Peer Specialist, and I'm excited to be able to walk alongside other families who are figuring out what success looks like to them.
